Spartanburg/Cherokee I-85 Widening Project

The proposed widening of I-85 in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties from Gossett Road (Exit 80) to north of Shelby Highway (Exit 96). This project will include interchange improvements at Exits 83 (Battleground Road), 87 (Green River Road), 95 (Pleasant School Road), and 96 (Shelby Road).

  • There will be two public meetings held:
    • Tuesday March 24, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Gaffney High School located at 149 Twin Lake Road, Gaffney, SC
    • Thursday, March 26, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Cowpens Middle School located at 150 Foster Street, Cowpens, SC


Update (Nov 2015):

  • A public hearing concerning the proposed widening of a portion of I-85 in Cherokee and Spartanburg counties will take place on Tuesday, December 1, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Gaffney High School. There will be a brief, formal presentation starting at 6:00 pm in the auditorium.

Update (Jan 2017):

  • SCDOT will hold a Public Meeting Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at the Oakland Elementary School Cafeteria (151 Mud Creek Rd, Inman) to focus on the segment of I-85 in Spartanburg County. People can drop in, see displays, get informational handouts and share comments with DOT.


Update (Feb 2018):

  • Information on a temporary closure of I-85 Southbound ramps at Exit 80 (Gossett Rd) can be downloaded as a PDF below. The ramps are anticipated to be closed from February 28, 2018 until April 6, 2018.


Update (April 2018):

  • Nightly Lane Closures on I-85 North & Southbound: expect lane closures nightly on I-85 northbound from mm 84-88 and I-85 southbound from mm 78-80 & mm 87-90. These should continue through Sunday night, April 29, 2018.

  • I-85 Southbound Exit and Entrance Ramps onto Exit 80 Gossett Rd: anticpate continued closure of southbound exit ramp and two entrance ramps at I-85 Exit 80 Gossett Rd. These ramps will be closed until May 7, 2018. I-85 traffic desiring to exit at Gossett Road will detour along southbound I-85 from Exit 80 to Exit 78 and then return to Exit 80 via northbound I-85. Traffic on Gossett Road desiring to enter onto I-85 southbound will travel south on the Sha Lane frontage road to Exit 78/US Route 221 and enter southbound I-85.   • Dewberry Road Closure UPDATED DETOUR MAP: Motorists are also advised that a portion of Dewberry Road will remained closed in Spartanburg County, between Exit 80 (S 57 - Gossett Rd) and Exit 83 (SC 110 - Battleground Rd), until May 15, 2018. An updated detour map has been provided and is available on the project website listed below.


Update (Aug 2018):

  • WSPA article: I-85 lane closings in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties
  • Starting Tuesday, Aug 21 there will be lanes closed in both directions of I-85 in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties. The closures will last through Sunday, Aug 26. The left lane of I-85 South from MM 84-80 will be closed as well as left lane closure on I-85 North from MM 80-87.
