All new interested applicants are required to attend an informational meeting with county staff prior to receiving a traffic calming application and packet. Meetings can be scheduled by calling the Planning Department at 864-596-3570.
In 2007, Spartanburg County Council approved a traffic calming policy that allows residents to request traffic calming devices on their street if a neighborhood is experiencing unsafe vehicular traffic.
After an application to county staff, and a determination that the street in question is a valid candidate for traffic calming, residents are given instructions regarding petitioning the neighborhood for its approval of the installation of traffic calming devices. County policy mandates that 75% of residences on a street where the device will be placed, and 25% of residences that must use that street for access, approve traffic calming measures.
Please do not petition your neighborhood until asked to do so by county staff, as a specific process must be followed.Failure to follow these instructions may result in a petition being declared invalid.
Once the petition is finalized, the Department of Public Works will perform speed and volume studies on the street in question. In general, for a device to be approved by the county, the street should have a volume of 750 vehicles a day, and the 85th percentile speed (the speed that 85 percent of vehicles are traveling) should be at least 10 mph over the posted speed limit. If the street qualifies, it will be placed on a list for traffic calming installation as funding permits.
